All Is Set For Prez Mahama's Swearing-In

Government is ready for the swearing-in ceremony of President elect John Dramani Mahama, outgoing Minster of Information, Fritz Baffuor has said.

Fritz Baffuor told Joy News, given the successful organization of late John Mills’ funeral at the Independence Square, the government is sure of organizing a successful ceremony on January 7.

He however noted that Parliament is working hard on rectifying a technical challenge that is seeking to challenge the smooth transition.

According to the Transition Act, the new Parliament should be inaugurated 2 days before the 7th [of January]. The Constitution also states that the first meeting of the new Parliament should see the election of deputy Speakers and that should take place after dissolution.

He said Parliament is however working hard to ensure that these bottlenecks are amended between now and the January 3, 2013.

The Information Minister also revealed that so far, most of the Ministers have submitted their handing over notes as requested by the Head of the Transition Team, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur. He said also the four-wheel vehicles requested by the Head of Transition Team have also been returned by the Ministers and the appointees of government.

President Mahama had 50.63% - PNC

President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for Election 2012, pulled 50.63 per cent of the valid votes cast.

The Peoples National Convention (PNC) made the claim in statement signed by Mr Emmanuel Wilson, the party’s National Organizer, copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Saturday.

The PNC said collation of results it made, indicates Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had 47.71 per cent.

“By the results of our collation and its comparison with the figures declared by the Electoral Commission, as well as figures declared by other reputable institutions, we are confident that the results declared by the EC represent a true reflection of the 2012 December polls,” the statement said.

It said, according to the PNC, the collation of its results show that the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) had 0.59 per cent; Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) 0.40 per cent; PNC 0.23 per cent; and the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) 0.19 per cent, the United Freedom Party (UFP) 0.09 per cent and the Independent Candidate 0.16 per cent.

The statement said the PNC sought to address the 2012 post-election issues that have engaged the attention of Ghanaians, particularly the declaration of results by the chairman of the EC, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan.

It said the PNC set up structures for the collation of electoral results, from the polling station level to the constituency and national collation centers.

The statement said: “We were also represented at the EC’s strong room for the purpose of comparing our collated figures with that of the EC collated and certified results”.

The PNC, however, expressed grave concern that though any of the participants in the recent elections may have one issue or the other concerning the electoral process, the recent occurrences do not conform to lay down procedures of seeking redress.

The party called on leadership of other political parties to continue to preach the message of peace and to restrain their supporters from engaging in lawlessness.

The PNC appealed to Ghanaians, political party leadership, social and political communicators and radio serial callers to abstain from provocative language.

The party also called on media practitioners to respect ethics of their profession, cross check facts and eschew sensationalism.

EC, NPP Polling Agents 'Meeting' Claim Is Senseless - Afari Gyan

The Electoral Commission has denied claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that it is inviting its polling agents to a special meeting.

This follows the party’s rejection of the electoral results and its subsequent threat to seek legal redress. The NPP issued a statement on Friday cautioning its polling agents against participating in any such meeting.

It said its agents in the Eastern, Volta, Northern and other regions have received invitations for the supposed meeting from the EC.

But Chairman of the EC Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan says the claims are false.

“We are not inviting anybody. It is not true; it is not true. I don’t have any idea about it; it is not true,” he vehemently denied.

He expressed disquiet about the allegation wondering why such spurious allegations will be made against the Commission.

“Why would we call their agents to a meeting? For what? We are calling NPP agents to a meeting for what?... They are not our agents. They appointed them, we didn’t appoint them [so] why should we invite them to a meeting?”

Dr. Afari Gyan said the allegations do not make sense and must be stopped.

Come Out In Your Numbers And Give NDC One Touch Victory - Prez Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has urged National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters and sympathisers to come out in their numbers on Friday, December 7, 2012, to vote for the NDC to ensure a one-touch victory for the party.

He expressed the belief that God would give the NDC victory in the election, and said it was left with the NDC supporters and sympathisers to go out and cast their vote to guarantee the victory.

President Mahama, who is the Presidential candidate of the NDC, made the call at separate rallies at Ashaiman, Tema, Nungua, Old Ningo, Prampram, Ada and Goi, in the Greater Accra Region.

In all the areas, enthusiastic supporters lined up the streets to welcome the President and to lead him and his entourage to the rally grounds.

The supporters echoed the ‘ede bee keke’ slogan of the NDC and danced to the party’s songs. After each of the rallies, some of the supporters followed the President’s convoy dancing to the party’s songs.

The President said it was important for NDC supporters to make sure that they exercise their franchise before travelling.

He said the NDC believed in peace, and therefore, urged the NDC supporters and sympathisers to restrict themselves to the voting, and avoid and avoid any provocation.

He said the security services were ready to deal with any group of people who intended to foment violence on the election day.

President Mahama said after the voting, they should go back home and come back after the close of voting to witness the counting.

President Mahama stressed the need for NDC to avoid ‘skirt and blouse’ voting, which is voting for him as the President and voting for a Parliamentary candidate of a different political party.

He said as the President, he would need majority in Parliament to be support the passage and approval of government policies and programmes.

The President pledged to offer a leadership of humility, tolerance, peace, unity and listening to the views of others.

He said he would use himself as a needle to sew through all Ghanaians to ensure unity and peaceful coexistence in the country.

President Mahama reiterated the government’s commitment to facilitate work on the Ada Sea Defence Project to protect the areas along the coast from vagaries of the sea.

He mentioned that the government would upgrade the Motorway into a six-lane asphalted road and construct an interchange on the motorway round.

On education, the President said the free education policy being proposed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was just a political ploy to deceive Ghanaians into voting for the party.

He said at this time of the nation’s development, the available resources should be used towards expanding access to education rather than focusing on free education.

For instance, the President said some countries, including Kenya and Botswana, which had introduced free education in the senior high schools (SHS) were struggling with the system.

He said while Botswana had reintroduced fees in SHS, Kenya was appealing to donor agencies and development partners to support her to expand infrastructure and get more facilities to run the schools.

President Mahama said the next NDC believed in expanding access and ensuring quality education.

Consequently, he said, the government intended to create 200 community senior high schools, 10 teacher training colleges, a university in the Eastern Region and many nursing and midwifery training colleges.

However, President Mahama, as resources became more available, the government would work to make SHS progressively free as required by the 1992 Constitution.

President Mahama said the NDC would be equipping the youth with skills and creating more jobs for the youth.

For instance, he said, the government would expand the expand the Local Enterprises and Skills Development Programme (LESDEP) and the Youth Enterprises and Skills Development Programme (YESDEP) to enable more youth to benefit from skills training.

He said after the training, the youth would be provided with equipment and start-up capital to start their own businesses.

Besides, the President said, the next NDC government would come up with a stimulus package to provide long-term financing to thriving businesses in the country.

He said the aim was to enable the businesses to expand and create more job opportunities for the youth.

Konadu has not endorsed Akufo-Addo- NDP

Nana Konadu denies and  Nana Akufo- Addo

The ex-first lady and flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has denied endorsing the New Patriotic Party leader Nana Akufo-Addo.

Dr Hilarious Abiu Deputy Director of Communications of the NDP told Joy News there has not been any explicit endorsement of Nana Akufo-Addo by the NDP flagbearer.

Akufo-Addo had told thousands of NPP supporters at the party’s final rally in Accra on Wednesday that information picked up by the campaign team indicated that Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings had endorsed him and had directed all her supporters to vote for the NPP presidential candidate and the NDP parliamentary candidates.

He thanked Mrs Rawlings for the gesture. But the NDP leader has dismissed the statement.

Her spokesperson, Dr Abiu said there has not been any express declaration from Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, neither has she directed anybody to make any such declaration on her behalf.

What she told members is that they must make a good assessment of their living standards and evaluate the various policies being trumpeted by the various parties, Abiu clarified.

He stated however that the NDP has been diametrically opposed to the NDC because it failed to fight corruption.

He said Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings will later speak to the issue. (Myjoyonline)

Court To Afari-Gyan: You’re In Contempt For Refusing To Register 3,000 Voters

EC Chairman, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan

The Accra Fast track High Court yesterday gave the Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) up to December 5, 2012 to conduct biometric registration of some voters in the Kasena Nankana East District of the Upper East Region or face the wrath of the court.

The court, presided over by Mr. Justice Utter Dery, gave the order after finding the EC Chairman, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, and two other officials of the commission guilty of contempt for disregarding an order to conduct biometric registration of the voters in the area.

The court is set to hand down its sentence on December 5, 2012 to enable the contemnors to purge themselves.

The other contemnors are Mr. Sarfo Kantanka, the Deputy Chairman of the EC, and Mr. Nicholas Pawiah, the Kasena Nankana District Electoral Officer.

The court also rescinded a bench warrant which had been issued for the arrest of Mr. Pawiah.

The action of the court was predicated on a judgment given on October 18, 2012 against the EC and six others by the court, presided over by Mr. Justice Edward Asante Amoako, which ordered the EC to conduct registration of voters in eight affected registration centres of the Atosale/Azaasi and Akumkongo/Abempingo Electoral areas within 14 days.

The court further ordered the Upper East Regional Police Command to provide the necessary protection for officers of the EC to enable them to undertake the registration exercise and that if the officers thought that the police in the area did not have enough men to provide the necessary protection, they should report the matter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The court of appeal further said concerning the volatility of the security situation in the area, it was of the view that the security services were capable of dealing with any situation in Ghana and so it should not be grounds to disenfranchise the people of the area.
