‘He who alleges must prove’ - Mustapha Hamid

Mustapha Hamid

Spokesperson of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, has stated emphatically that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is not considering any legal action against those who accuse him of smoking ‘wee’ and using other narcotics drugs.

He said Nana Akufo-Addo, being a visionary leader, has the plight of Ghanaians at heart and would not let such libelous allegations deter him from unseating the ruling party in 2012.

Some members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and journalists sympathetic to them who accused the NPP flag bearer of using narcotic drugs ahead of the 2008 electioneering campaign have challenged him to proceed to court and seek damages if he (Nana Akufo-Addo) has nothing to hide about the drug allegations being leveled against him.

Notable amongst them is the editor of the Daily post newspaper, Michael Dokosi who alleged that Nana Akufo-Addo was arrested at JFK Airport in 2007 with a quantity of marijuana (wee), which the NPP flagbearer claimed was for his personal use.

Despite an official document by his lawyers from the US authorities to set the records straight that Nana Akufo–Addo was never arrested at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, for possession of narcotic drugs; Michael Dokosi rubbished the report insisting that the NPP flag bearer should go to court since his newspaper is ready to prove the allegation.

The situation became murkier when the Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwasi Pratt was quoted in the International whistle blower website, wikileaks, in its recent cable leaks from the US Embassy in Accra, as saying Nana used to smoke a lot of marijuana.

This awakened the drug allegations leveled against Nana Akufo-Addo with his accusers feeling vindicated and others demanding his resignation as the NPP flag bearer to put an end to what they describe as an albatross around his neck.

But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Mustapha Hamid believes that as the popular legal maxim goes "he who alleges must prove”.

According to him, the onus lies on those making such scurrilous allegations against Nana Akufo-Addo to rather sue him in court since engaging in such acts in the country bothers on criminality.

Mustapha Hamid found it very strange that the NPP flag bearer would be walking a free man if the NDC and its cohorts have incriminating evidence that he(Nana Akufo-Addo) is indeed a cocaine or marijuana addict.

The NPP man who is also a lecturer at the Department of Religion and Human Values of the University of Cape Coast stated tha the drug issue is just a ploy by the ruling party to distract Nana Akufo-Addo's listening campaign tour.

Mustapha Hamid stressed that Nana Akufo-Addo remains unperturbed and focused to unseat the Mills-led administration in 2012; hence he would not waste precious time going in and out of court to defend himself on such a baseless accusation.
