Sekou’s departure could be a blessing – Asiedu-Nketia

The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has treated with derision the impact Sekou Nkrumah’s absence would have on the party.

Sekou Nkrumah early Tuesday announced his resignation from the NDC, claiming the party had not given him any meaningful role to play.

He further stated that his continuous stay in the NDC would be an obstacle to the ambitions of her sister, Samia Nkrumah, to rebuild the Convention People’s Party.

Samia is the chairperson-elect of the CPP, after congress at the weekend elected her to the post.

But the leadership of the NDC seems unperturbed by Sekou's resignation. General Secretary, Asiedu-Nketia suggested to Joy News that Dr Sekou Nkrumah was not so active; hence his departure cannot be a blow to the party.

“Beside the fact that you are the son of a former president, it doesn’t give you a big place in a socialist party such as ours. We consider him to be somebody who worked hard during the campaign, that is about it.

"But there are several others who also worked hard. And so let’s pray that his leaving will cause many other people to come on board,” Asiedu-Nketia surmised.

Perhaps, he indicated, Sekou thought by virtue of being the son of Ghana’s first president he should have been given a leadership position in the party without he contesting for.

“We no longer believe in big names, we believe in organization,” Asiedu-Nketia maintained, conceding that his departure “will shed some leaves, where some more leaves will grow, but as far as I am concerned it is not a big deal at all.”

Meanwhile, the chairperson-elect of the CPP, Samia Yaba Nkrumah has welcomed his brother’s move to help her rebuild their father’s party.

“I think this is yet another development that is giving more hope within our ranks.”
