"Ghanaians Are Hypocrites"

The director of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Akosua Adomako Ampofo, has descended heavily on Ghanaians describing them as hypocrites when it comes to the issue of homosexuality.

Prof. Ampofo said she is surprise at the level of hypocricy exhibited by Ghanaians to the extent that the hospitable nation no longer show compassion to its own people in the minority.

"A few days ago, I heard the youth of Yilo Krobo had defaced a police station demanding that a suspect be released to them to be mobbed," she said. "We have become a very intolerant nation."

Prof. Ampofo said the compassion shown by Jesus Christ for all irrespective of their race, culture or religion should guide Ghanaians to accommodate minorities such as lesbians and homosexuals in society.

"It's a paradox because at one level we condone sin in many guises and in another we have lost the compassion for our neighbour, which propelled Christ to die for us," Prof. Ampofo said at a lecture in honour of one of the Big Six, William Ofori-Atta.

She added: "It means that even if we think homosexuality is a sin, we should recognise the right of that person to an existence so that so long as he or she does not infringe on the right of others we have ample examples of Jesus' compassion."

She said ascribing blacket negativity to the practice could be counter productive and will drive such persons out of mainstream society. According to her, individuals who practice the act must be supported and shown love if they are to reform.
