Black Stars Arrive From Nations Cup Without Asamoah Gyan

There was no usual pomp and pagentry when Ghana players arrived from the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday afternoon. The move is a disapproval to the team’s failure to make it to the finals of the competition. “Only a few fans who were in printed T-shirts of the Ayew brothers made noise at the airport,” a Joy fm reporter said on Sunday. “I also saw relatives of Anthony Annan at the airport.”

The Black Stars were severely criticized after failing to reach the final of the 2012 edition in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Striker Asamoah Gyan was the only absentee from Ghana’s contingent who returned home on Sunday from the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

His UAE club Al Ain sent a private jet to Malabo on Sunday morning to ensure he arrives in time for a key match on Wednesday.

Even though he was scheduled to travel with the squad to Accra, his plans changed after Al Ain opted to fly him to make him available for the game. The 26-year-old has been severely criticised in Ghana after failing to convert an early penalty in the semi-final loss to Zambia.

Gyan has suffered a lot of backlash on the various social networking sites by furious fans across the globe. However, he is the top scorer of the current Black Stars set up with 27 goals and his contribution to the national team seems to have faded from the memory of the fans.

Ghana, pre-tournament favourites, failed in their quest to win a fifth Nations Cup and extended their 30-year wait for the prestigious silverware.
