AFC Bournemouth sign Christian Atsu on season long loan from Chelsea

ATSU (left) and Eddie Howe (right)

AFC Bournemouth have their continued Barclays Premier League preparations with the season long loan signing of Christian Atsu from Chelsea, subject to Premier League approval.
The Ghana international, who signed for the Blues in September 2013, operates as a winger, although he can also play as an attacking midfielder.

Since joining the Premier League champions, Atsu has gained experience out on loan with Everton and Vitesse.

Collecting almost 40 caps for his country since his debut in 2012, he has played in the 2014 World Cup and was selected for two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments for Ghana.

The midfielder started his professional career in Portugal with Porto, where he was coached by former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Andre Villas Boas. READ FULL STORY AT

Compare And Contrast.....The Clasico

Saturday's first Clasico of the season will be billed as the usual clash of Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in their eternal struggle for the big individual awards. Taking second billing will be Gareth Bale and Neymar, the new kids on the block but without the underwear adverts (apparently Ronaldo has that sewn up as well).

But this Clasico -- more so perhaps than even when Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho were at each other's throats (or eyes, in the case of Tito Vilanova, who will receive a colourful gesture at Camp Nou) -- is about the two managers. Neither Real or Barca's incumbent whiteboard-scribbler has yet experienced a Real Madrid-Barcelona contest, and both will be keenly interested in how the other's side square up.

Gerardo Martino spoke of "tweaking" what he had inherited when he was presented at Camp Nou. A relative unknown in Europe but a coach schooled in the finer arts of the South American game, he was at least a familiar face to fans of the national side after his Paraguay team came extremely close to derailing Spain's eventual 2010 World Cup triumph in the quarterfinals. Tactically flexible, he was a disciple of attack-minded former Athletic coach Marcelo Bielsa during his playing days at Newell's Old Boys and he was never going to ask the architects of tiki-taka to sit back.

What he has tried to instill in his side is the idea that a goal does not have to be preceded by 87 pinpoint passes; route one has its place, even at Camp Nou. The 7-0 aggregate hammering Barca suffered at the hands of Bayern Munich in last season's Champions League semifinals had already suggested that the "Plan B" mooted by Guardiola during his tenure was in need of dusting off. The Bavarian side is hardly touchy-feely with the ball, after all. Hands were wrung and teeth were gnashed in Catalonia when Rayo won the moral victory of enjoying more possession than its opponent, which the stattos were quick to point out had not occurred since Real beat them in a 2008 Clasico. The fact that Rayo still shipped four without reply at home was lost amid the self-flagellation.

Since his arrival in Madrid, Ancelotti has been working along completely opposite lines. Jose Mourinho's legacy was a brutally efficient counterattacking team that struggled to hold on to the ball and control the pace of games. Ancelotti's Serie A career took in a different panorama, from the evolution of Catenaccio in the 1970s to the lethargic pace of the Italian game in the 1980s and 90s. At Madrid, he has tried to encourage his players to break when a break is on, but also to cover more efficiently and to slow things down when required.

This was largely achieved against Ancelotti's former side Juventus on Wednesday. Instead of chasing the game when 2-1 and a man up, Real instead aimed to keep possession. As Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger lamented after his team lost to a late Borussia Dortmund goal this week: "We lost the game because we maybe wanted so much to win it. We forgot that if you cannot win it, don't lose it." Real, although a goal to the good, made no such mistakes.

To a certain extent, Martino and Ancelotti are trying to impose the finer qualities of the eternal rival onto their own sides. Neither has succeeded fully yet, but the signs point to a very open and balanced Clasico indeed.

On the field, the focus will be on the starting line-ups that file out of the tunnel on Saturday. Apparently Karim Benzema is to be dropped, but not for Alvaro Morata. Gareth Bale is expected to start, but where? Ancelotti is quoted in AS as saying the Welshman is happy playing on the right, "and when he plays, that is where he will play." Could Angel di Maria, alongside Ronaldo -- Real's most in-form player -- then be shifted to the left, with the Portuguese in the central role he is gliding into more and more frequently? That would certainly give Barcelona's backline something to think about.

Gerard Pique is a doubt and Carles Puyol, who will be in the squad at least, returned only last week from a seven-month layoff. That leaves a potential centre-back pairing of Javier Mascherano, who admitted he makes too many mistakes in the position after a gaffe in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Milan, and Marc Bartra, who has made a total of 29 appearances for the first team in five seasons. Adriano can tuck into central defence but with Jordi Alba injured that would leave no recognised left-back. Alex Song can do a job in the middle of the last line of resistance, but that is hardly a happy prospect for Cules considering the firepower Real can assemble.

Ancelotti has the opposite problem. Too many of his players are now available for necessity to govern the luxury of choice, and options abound: Xabi Alonso is back in full training; Bale is finally ready to be unleashed; Isco and Luka Modric are vying for the right to remain in the first XI when Alonso returns alongside Sami Khedira; Alvaro Morata is improving by the game; and Dani Carvajal has been a constant threat to Alvaro Arbeloa since returning from the Bundesliga.

It's a headache, but one that Ancelotti should welcome. All the parts are finally coming together. All he has to do is figure out where to put them. With Real now just three points off the Liga pace, Saturday would be a good time for everything to click.

Cassano names baby ‘Lionel’ after Messi

Cassano
The Italian revealed his belief that the Argentina forward is "the best player in football history", and said he eventually convinced his wife that it was not such a bad idea

Inter forward Antonio Cassano has revealed that he has named his newborn son Lionel due to his “love” for Barcelona icon Lionel Messi.

The Argentine scored 91 goals in competitive matches in 2012 and won his fourth Ballon d’Or in a row, and the Nerazzurri star has said that his admiration for the attacker influenced the naming of his child.

“I named him Lionel because I’m a massive fan of the best player in history. My wife wasn’t keen, but then I convinced her,” he told Italian TV programme Undici.

“In my opinion, Messi is the most important player in history. I’m in love with him on a footballing level.”

Lionel, who was born on Monday night, is Cassano’s second son after his firstborn Christopher (perhaps Cassano’s version of Cristiano?!).

Extra Time thinks that it is probably a good thing that Cassano did not follow Gerard Pique’s formula of naming his son after a club the other side of the Mediterranean: Milan.

After all, Real Sociedad doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as Lionel, does it?

Messi breaks world record with goal streak

Messi breaks world record with goal against Deportivo

The Argentine has become the only player in football history to have netted in 17 consecutive league games following his late strike at Camp Nou on Saturday night
Lionel Messi's late strike for Barcelona at home to Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday night saw the Argentine set a new world record for consecutive league goals in the top flight.

The goal, Barca's second in the 2-0 win over the Galicians, means Messi has netted in 17 straight Liga games, bettering the previous mark of 16, set by Teodor Peterek.

Peterek had scored 22 goals in 16 consecutive league matches in the Polish First Division way back in 1937-38.

Messi, who recently surpassed 200 goals in La Liga, now has 40 in the Primera Division this term, a total which would have been enough to win the Pichichi prize for the top scorer in every single season except the last one - which he himself claimed.

Brazil striker Ronaldo previously held the record for scoring in consecutive games in La Liga with 10 during his time with Barca, a mark long since surpassed by the Argentine.

Rooney & Fergie on explosive collision course over Manchester United future

Rooney & Fergie
The Red Devils boss has run out of patience with his inconsistent star man and wants a summer sale, but the player himself is determined not to be forced out of Old Trafford

As he emerged smiling from the Manchester United team bus two hours before kick-off at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening, Wayne Rooney had no clue as to the humiliation that lay in store.

In truth, few did - Sir Alex Ferguson only informed a handful of senior players of his starting XI before reaching the ground. That Rooney was not among them is in itself telling.

When the teams were announced, shockwaves rippled through Twitter. Wayne Rooney, resident superstar with a wage to match and one of the biggest symbols of his club for almost a decade, snubbed in favour of a raw young striker, a flaky Portuguese winger and a 39-year-old legend.

The striker himself made no comment, but wife Coleen broke her silence to voice a reaction shared by many. “I can’t believe @WayneRooney isn’t starting tonight!!!,” she tweeted.

It was regarded as a surprise of epic proportions. But then, perhaps it should not have been. Sir Alex’s benching of Rooney for United’s biggest game of the season, seismic though it was, is merely a continuation of the process which has seen the relationship between player and manager erode over the past three years.

It is now at breaking point. Ferguson wants shot of Rooney, but the striker is in no hurry to go anywhere. That is where Rooney holds the advantage; his value will nosedive as soon as the summer transfer window closes. If he is still at Old Trafford on September 1, he will be into his penultimate season at the club. The two men are at loggerheads, with the backdrop of a Bosman transfer on the horizon.

Even at their closest, Rooney and Sir Alex always enjoyed a fiery bond. In his autobiography released last year, entitled My Decade, the former Everton star revealed he has often elected to “shout back” when subjected to the Scot’s infamous ‘hairdryer’ treatment. “I don’t like getting shouted at by anyone,” he admitted. “I tell him he’s wrong and I’m right.”

Yet underneath all this, Sir Alex always fundamentally saw Rooney as something of a prodigal son. Until, of course, October 2010 when, having endured the worst few months of his career to date, the striker stunned everyone by announcing his intention to leave and questioning the club’s ambition.

If the former disclosure hurt Sir Alex, the latter left him seething. Rooney’s withering assessment of the ability of his own team-mates was viewed as a personal slight by his manager and, despite the saga unexpectedly ending in a bumper new contract with a basic wage of €287,000-a-week, the Scot has neither forgotten nor forgiven.

Ever since, Rooney has been the United player most regularly singled out for criticism, whether because of his weight, his lifestyle or his level of performance.

He has also become more acquainted with being dropped - on New Year’s Day last year he was omitted from the United squad to take on Blackburn at Old Trafford, fined a week’s wages and forced to train on his day off following a poor showing at Carrington the morning after a Boxing Day night out with Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson.

The investment reportedly demanded by Rooney arrived last summer in the shape of Robin van Persie. But if the England star believed the £25 million Dutchman was a sign of his growing influence at Old Trafford, he has been proved sorely mistaken. Rather than enhancing his standing, the former Arsenal man has relegated the 27-year-old to second billing.

This season Rooney’s most important stats remain impressive - 18 goals and 15 assists in 32 appearances for club and country, despite rarely playing as the lead striker - yet his efforts have done nothing to alter Sir Alex’s view that he is no longer the player who sensationally lit up the Premier League three years ago, or one capable of influencing the biggest matches.

Rooney’s lucrative current contract runs until the summer of 2015, but Sir Alex has no desire to renew it and commit another huge pot of money to a player he no longer believes merits such investment. The Scot is also loathe to deal again with Rooney’s controversial agent Paul Stretford. He has turned his attentions to other options, most notably Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski.

The only other solution for United is to sell, and doing so at the end of this season would guarantee the greatest possible financial return - leave it another season and Rooney will be heading into the final year of his contract, with a Bosman on the horizon.

But getting rid of Rooney will not be easy - most notably because the player himself has no desire to leave, regardless of the tensions with his manager.

He is settled in Manchester with high-school sweetheart Coleen, who is expected to give birth to the couple’s second child in July, in the middle of the transfer window. They live in a custom-built multi-million pound mansion in Prestbury, Cheshire, which was only completed last year. The close proximity to Liverpool also means familiar connections on both sides remain close.

From a footballing perspective, too, it is also easy to see why Rooney would want to stay at Old Trafford. Just 54 goals shy of Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time scoring record for United at the age of just 27, he is almost certain to write himself into the history of the club if he remains.

If he is to leave, however, the obvious solution in geographical terms would appear to be a move across town to Manchester City.

The ‘noisy neighbours’ were Rooney’s most interested suitors when he submitted his transfer request three years ago. But it is highly unlikely Sir Alex would sell a talented asset to his bitterest rivals, and City for their part now consider Napoli’s Edinson Cavani and Atletico Madrid’s Radamel Falcao higher priority targets.

Beyond City, Rooney’s potential destinations are limited. Barcelona would be unlikely to make a move due to financial constraints, and the major Italian clubs are already in the grip of austerity measures. Bayern Munich, though capable of spending big money where necessary, would be unwilling to match his mammoth wages. And although the upcoming presidential elections at Real Madrid will not be as fiercely disputed as usual, the unopposed Florentino Perez is focused firmly on Falcao, though his top priority is keeping Cristiano Ronaldo happy.

Only Paris Saint-Germain look to have the resources and inclination to countenance signing a player of Rooney’s stature.

Invariably when a player exhausts the patience of Sir Alex, his days at Old Trafford are soon cut short. Just ask Jaap Stam, Roy Keane, Ruud van Nistelrooy or David Beckham.

But in this particular game of poker, it is Rooney who has the upper hand. He may harbour no hopes of outlasting his indefatigable manager, but he can still happily play the waiting game, allow his contract to run down and see what comes. Emotions aside, Sir Alex knows it would be madness to allow a player who remains an incredibly valuable asset to leave for nothing.

At 27, Rooney knows his next contract may be his last. He is prepared to wait for it, but his manager has made up his mind too. The scene is set for another titanic battle of wills.

Alhaji Gruzah, Osei Kuffour To Lead Talks For Ayews Return

Alhaji Grunsah

King Faisal President Alhaji Karim Gruzah will be embarking on a personal initiative to have the Ayew brothers rescind their decision to retire from the Black Stars.

The Olympique Marseille duo, Andre and Jordan, slapped in letters on Tuesday to prematurely call time on their international career.

The shocking move by the sons of Ghana legend Abedi Pele has split opinions amongst fans of the four-time African champions.

While others believe their decision ought to be respected and be left alone, others insist their return is crucial for the success of the Black Stars in upcoming assignments.

Alhaji Gruzah who is a long-standing friend of the Ayew family, aided by ex Ghana international Samuel Osei-Kuffour and Mighty Jets owner Abu Sodonko (all friends of the family) will however hold discussions with the celebrity family to trash out the concerns raised by the two players.

“If God permits, myself, Samuel Osei-Kuffour and Abu of Mighty Jets will be going to discuss the issues towards reconciliation,” Gruzah told Kumasi-based Fox FM. “We want a quick resolution to this issue in the interest of Ghana.”

Both players were not part of the Ghana squad that finished a disappointing fourth at the just ended Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Ronaldo "Killed" Barcelona's Dream in Copa Del Rey

Madrid Players celebrating a goal

Real Madrid stormed into the Copa Del Rey final in the most stunning manner possible, with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou in the second leg of their last-four clash on Tuesday.

With a 1-1 home draw to overcome from the first leg, Jose Mourinho looked on in jubilation as his team executed their gameplan to perfection, frustrating the Catalans at the back, and through an inspirational Cristiano Ronaldo, giving a counterattacking clinic up front.

The Portuguese opened the scoring from the penalty spot 12 minutes in, becoming the first player to score in six successive Clasicos away from home, and finished off a surging break shortly before the hour mark to put Madrid in the driving seat.

Raphael Varane put the finishing touches on an unbelievable night for the visitors when he headed home a corner, with Jordi Alba's late goal coming as little consolation for the hosts, as los Blancos now await either Sevilla or Atletico Madrid in the showpiece event on May 18.

Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fabregas and Xavi returned to start in midfield for the hosts, with Carles Puyol partnering Gerard Pique in defence. For Madrid, Varane, the standout performer from the first leg, started alongside Sergio Ramos at centre back.

Barca started positively, and with only two minutes on the clock, were nearly ahead. Pedro did brilliantly to turn Fabio Coentrao inside out and square for Lionel Messi, who narrowly missed the target from a tight angle.

But instead, it would be Madrid who would take the lead.Ronaldo was simply too quick for Pique, and was tripped up inside the area, leaving the referee with no choice but to award a penalty, from which the Portuguese forward slotted coolly into the bottom corner.

The Catalans exhibited their customary dominance of the ball, but Mourinho’s men were ready with discipline and numbers at the back, and a pacey threat on the counter whenever they won the ball.

Referee Alberto Undiano‎, already the villain of the piece in the eyes of the Camp Nou faithful for the decision against Pique, was showered with further venom from the stands after correctly denying penalty appeals for Fabregas and Pedro.

And the home fans were left frustrated again moments before half time, when Messi drilled a free kick agonizingly into the side netting, with half of the stadium already celebrating a goal.

The Blaugrana went close again minutes after the restart when Diego Lopez parried an effort by Busquets, with Alvaro Arbeloa taking the rebound off the toes of Fabregas from point blank range.

But much like the start of the first half, the chance was spurned, and again, Madrid would punish their profligacy on the counterattack, this time putting the tie virtually out of reach.

Sami Khedira’s sublime first-time pass after winning the ball released Angel Di Maria against Puyol. The Barca captain was left on his backside by the skill of the winger, whose initial shot was parried by Jose Pinto, only for Ronaldo to bury the rebound.

And with 22 minutes left, Madrid were in dreamland again, when Varane rose highest to head home Mesut Ozil’s corner in almost identical fashion to his goal in the first leg.

Flares were set off in the stands as a few home fans lost patience with events on the ptich, but their mood improved ever so slightly just before injury time when Alba ghosted in behind the fullback to slot Andres Iniesta's clipped pass beyond Lopez.

But the damage was long done by the irrepressible visitors, who will now contest the final in three months. The Clasico drama is not quite done, however, as both sides will lock horns at Santiago Bernabeu in la Liga on Saturday.

Andre, Jordan Ayew retire temporarily from Black Stars

Jordan Ayew(L) and Andre Ayew(M)with their father Abedi Ayew Pele(R)

Footy-ghana.com understands that Olympique Marseille duo Andre and Jordan Ayew have temporarily withdrawn their services from the senior national team, the Black Stars.

According to our sources, a letter on their behalf was presented to the Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association earlier today.

It is unclear as to why the two brothers are taking a break, but perhaps it is in reaction to being axed by Black Stars head coach Kwasi Appiah from the 2013 African Nations Cup squad.

Jordan Ayew was excluded from the provisional squad whilst Andre was axed because he could not meet Appiah’s deadline to report to the team’s training camp in Abu Dhabi.

Messi's career at Barça: 13 years, 13 key moments

FC Barcelona - Messi 2018

Here's a look back at the crucial moments in Leo Messi's careers at FC Barcelona. The Argentine just extended his contract with the Club through 2018
Leo Messi, who renewed his contract through 2018, is 25 years old and he’s been with Barça for 13 years. Here's an overview of the 13 key moments in the world’s best player’s career:

- Official debut with the first team (October 16, 2004): Messi’s first match for the senior side was in La Liga in the Catalan derby played at Montjuïc. He was subbed in for Deco.

- His first goal in La Liga (May 1, 2005): Against Albacete, at the Camp Nou, Messi received an assist from Ronaldinho, the Argentine then chipped Valbuena to seal Barça’s 2-0 victory. That year Barça went on to win the first Liga title of the Rijkaard era.

- The Joan Gamper Trophy against Juventus (August 24, 2005): Even though Messi had already shown what he was capable of, his breakout match was against Capello’s Juventus in the Joan Gamper Trophy. The Argentine was simply unstoppable.

- 19-year-old Messi nets hat trick against Real Madrid (March 10, 2007): His first hat trick with the first team was against Real Madrid in the Clásico at the Camp Nou. His third goal came in the last minute of the match, his three goals secured a point for his team, who were down a man.

- Maradona-like goal against Getafe (April 18, 2007): In the semi-finals of the Cup, Messi scored a goal for the history books: he received the ball in the center of the pitch and left every defender, plus the keeper, in his wake before he fired to the back of the net. The goal is nearly identical to the one Maradona scored in the 1986 World Cup against England.

- Treble in Rome (May 27, 2009): The Argentine scored a header against Manchester United in Rome and secured the Champions League title for FC Barcelona and, at the same time, secured the Club's first ever treble: Cup, League, Champions League.

- First Ballon d’Or (December 1, 2009): After finishing third in 2007 and second in 2008, France Football named Leo Messi the best footballer of the year in 2009.

- Match-winning goal scored with his ‘heart’; Club World Cup title (December 1, 2009): Barça went on to win the only title that hadn’t graced the Catalan Club’s trophy cabinet in December of 2009. In Abu Dhabi, Barça defeated Estudiantes de La Plata in overtime thanks to a goal scored by Leo Messi. Barça went on to lift its sixth trophy in a year after the game, that team is affectionately known as the Barça of the Six Cups.

-Decisive goal in Wembley (May 28, 2011): The final of the Champions League against Manchester United was one of the most brilliant of the Pep Guardiola era. Messi scored the go-ahead goal (2-1) in the second half and the Blaugrana would go on to win the title (3-1).

- Highest goalscorer in the history of the Club (March 20, 2012): Against Granada, at the Camp Nou, Leo Messi became the highest goalscorer in the history of the Club in official matches. He broke the previous record of 232 goals set by César Rodríguez.

- 50 goals in La Liga in one season and second Golden Boot Award (May 12, 2012): The 2011/12 season ends with a jaw-dropping 50-goal tally for Messi. The Argentine, thanks to his 50 goals in the domestic competition, wins his second Golden Boot Award.

- Messi breaks Müller’s record (December 22, 2012): The Argentine scored 91 goals in 2012 and smashes Gerd Müller’s record of 85 goals scored in a calendar year (1972).

- Fourth consecutive Ballon d’Or (January 7, 2013): Messi becomes the first footballer ever to win the Ballon d’Or four times. In addition, all four awards were won consecutively.

AFCON 2013: Yiadom picks up injury in training

Ghana sweating on the fitness of Richmond Boakye-Yiadom

Ghana striker Richmond Boakye-Yiadom was unable to complete Tuesday evening’s training session after sustaining an injury.

The 19-year-old picked up the injury while going in for a tackle with an unnoticed teammate.

The on loan Juventus striker at Italian Serie-B club Sassuolo limped off the pitch with the unspecified injury.

The Black Stars medical team will assess his condition later in the evening and if necessary, will take him to the hospital tomorrow morning for further examination.

The injury to Boakye-Yiadom compounds the fitness situation in the Ghana camp ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations which commences this weekend.

Ghana is already sweating on the fitness of defender Isaac Vorsah and midfielder Anthony Annan who are battling minor injuries.

Coach Akwasi Appiah will be hoping to have all his players fit for Ghana’s opening game against DR Congo on Sunday.

The team is expected to travel to South Africa on Wednesday – four clear days towards their opening Group B encounter.

The Black Stars who will be based in Port Elizabeth will also face Mali and Niger at the group stage.

Wigan 0-4 Manchester United: Van Persie fires twice for dominant league leaders

Manchester United were treated to a New Year’s Day present as they eased past Wigan to stay seven points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

The hosts lacked the intensity required to beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and were picked off by the brilliance of Robin van Persie and Chicharito. The Mexican got two goals to add to his last minute winner on Boxing Day while the Dutchman was imperious throughout.

The game was actually over as a contest before half-time, as United sauntered into 2013 with the most comfortable three points they will win away from Old Trafford this season.

Even before Chicharito scored the opening goal in the 35th minute, the striker had the ball in net. Loitering on the shoulder of the last defender, he was found in behind by van Persie and easily beat Ali Al Habsi but was correctly ruled out for offside.

That was to serve as a warning of things to come, with United scoring twice in eight minutes to seal the points before the break. Referee Andre Marriner played an excellent advantage to allow the visitors to continue attacking; Jonny Evans found Patrice Evra whose shot across goal was criminally parried back into the six-yard box by Al Habsi, with Chicharito stealing in ahead of Maynor Figueroa.

Up until that point Roberto Martinez’s Latics had been dogged without truly threatening David De Gea – their only shot was an optimistic effort from Jean Beausejour – and were guilty of playing too narrow.

Despite three players falling over in the build-up to the second, and ultimately decisive, goal, there was very little Wigan could have done to stop van Persie.

In the 43rd minute, Chicharito, who was keen to stretch the game and pull the three central defenders out of position all afternoon, capitalised on two slips to find the Dutchman in the box. Still with a lot to do, the striker surprisingly brought the ball onto his right foot before guiding an exquisite finish into the corner to send the fairly lifeless away support delirious.

It ought to have been more after the break, but United were satisfied to play in second gear and take the points without stretching themselves too strenuously.

Having said that, on the one occasion Wigan looked like scoring, United were relatively fortunate to keep their 2-0 lead. Franco Di Santo’s cross come shot found its way to Arouna Kone at the back post; he crashed it into the net only to be flagged for offside. The decision showed the grey areas in the law, with Kone’s body off but his legs on.

That moment woke the league leaders up briefly. Rafael forced his way into the final third and was brought down 25 yards from goal. Van Persie stepped up, saw his shot blocked, but there was Chicharito again to pounce and drive his second goal past Al Habsi, who had no chance, before van Persie finished the rout late on.

LIONEL MESSI

LIONEL MESSI ’S two-week-old baby has already signed for a football club!
Argentina outfit Newell’s — where football god Messi played at youth level before joining Barcelona — have snapped up infant Thiago as a member.
Newell’s will be hoping their decision to beat the competition early pays off by Messi’s powers of soccer genius passing down through his genes to the little lad.
Baby Thiago, who was signed by his grandfather, is eight years younger than when his old man joined them in 1995.
The tot was born on November 2 which is one part of a bizarre riddle involving the current two best players in the world.
Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo is 869 days older than his great rival Messi.
But astonishingly, Ronaldo’s son — Cristiano Ronaldo Junior — is ALSO 869 days older than Messi’s lad.
Goal-getter Messi smashed another record last night as he reached 76 goals for the year after a brace in Barca’s 4-2 win at Mallorca — surpassing Pele’s previous record of 75.

Ahmed Toure denies HIV-Aids reports

The 25-year-old striker says he has not contracted the disease and did not flee his club. Ivorian player Ahmed Toure of Egyptian side El Gouna, who was reported to have contracted HIV and subsequently absconded from the North African country with a fake passport, has refuted the news report, saying his recent blood test showed he had no HIV infection.

The former Asante Kotoko forward, who spent three seasons in Ghana Premier League, said he left Egypt with a genuine passport after reaching an agreement with Gouna to return next January.

Toure is currently residing in Abidjan, according to his media team, which sent three copies of the player’s recent medical reports dated August 9, 2012 to Goal.com.

Ex-Kotoko Player Ahmed Toure Tests HIV Positive

Ahmed Toure
Egyptian club El Gouna announced on Saturday that newly recruited Ivorian player Ahmed Toure has left the country with a fake passport after he was diagnosed with HIV.

The team’s director Ahmed Al Sohafey said regular medical check ups revealed the player had recently contracted the virus, which did not appear during the initial test.

“When we signed him he did not suffer from any diseases, however we do regular check ups for the players all times and we now know that he has the virus” Al Sohafey was quoted as saying by supersport.com.

The 25-year-old striker, who was born in Burkina Faso but holding Ivorian nationality, joined Gouna from Ghanaian topflight Asante Kotoko, where he spent three seasons and scored 20 goals.

Cote D’Ivoire football federation (FIF) told Goal.com that it had received no information about the situation of the player or his whereabouts.

Ferguson backs referee Clattenburg

Ferguson backs referee Clattenburg
Alex Ferguson

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson stirred the pot in the latest racism storm to hit English soccer on Friday when he dismissed Chelsea's allegations that referee Mark Clattenburg racially abused two of their players last week.

Former Chelsea player Paul Elliott, the club's first black captain, also cast doubt on the club's claims that have put racism on the back pages again. Chelsea lodged an official complaint to the Premier League season after last Sunday's 3-2 home defeat by United, saying Clattenburg, who sent off two of their players in, had used "inappropriate language" to two of their players.

Later in the week they issued another statement saying they did not have evidence to support a second complaint of verbal abuse but said they had lodged a complaint with the Football Association regarding comments to Nigerian John Obi Mikel.

The Football Association, which has had to deal with high-profile racism cases involving Chelsea's former England skipper John Terry and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez this year, has opened an investigation into the claims. Ferguson, however, refuses to believe Chelsea's version of events.

"I don't believe Mark Clattenburg would make comments like that, I refuse to believe it," Ferguson told reporters at his Friday news conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash at home to Arsenal. "I think it's unthinkable in the modern climate and I just don't believe it, there is no way that a referee would stoop to that. I'm convinced of that.

"I think in the modern game it’s completely changed. I know myself that the banter that went on between players and the referee 25 years ago is different than today. I've never heard of a player coming to me in the last 15 years saying the referee swore in a game. That's where I stand, I don't believe it."

Talking to Reuters, Elliott, an ambassador for the anti-racism charity Kick it Out, said: "To me, what happened at Chelsea last Sunday, seemed like a car out of control, I thought with the John Terry thing, this had stopped. I thought we were moving forward but its like we've been hit by a two-footed challenge from the side and you've not seen it coming.

"Mark Clattenburg is a very capable and competent referee and I would be astonished if an authority figure in our game like him, an elite referee, could be found guilty of racism.

"I think we have to keep it in the balance and say "they are nothing more than allegations at the moment. There has to be a robust and transparent process to gather the information. Football does not need this at the moment. Our referees, in general terms are among the best in the world. And Mark Clattenburg has a fundamental right to defend those allegations."

FIFA referee Clattenburg, who will not be officiating at any Premier League games this weekend in the wake of Chelsea's claims, was at the centre of a tumultuous clash at Stamford Bridge last week. He sent off Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic and then showed a red card to the home side's Fernando Torres after believing the Spaniard had dived to try and win a free kick.

He later allowed United's 75th minute winner, scored by Javier Hernandez, despite it looking suspiciously offside. Some Chelsea players and officials are understood to have visited Clattenburg in his dressing room after the match.

Chelsea did not name any of the players involved in the claims regarding Clattenburg although would not deny that Mikel was one of them. The claims made by Chelsea come in the wake of Terry being banned for four matches after the FA found him guilty of racially abusing Queen Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.

Chelsea found themselves involved in another racism incident this week after a fan was photographed making monkey gestures during the 5-4 League Cup victory over United on Wednesday.

"Chelsea Football Club can confirm we are investigating an incident involving a member of the crowd at last night's game against Manchester United," the club said in a statement.

English FA condemns racism, reports to UEFA

England Serbia U21s violence

The Football Association says it has reported "a number of incidents of racism" to UEFA after England's Under-21 Euro 2013 qualifier in Serbia was marred by ugly scenes.

• Brewin: UEFA must get tough

Connor Wickham hit the only goal of the game at the Mladost Stadium in Krusevac as England secured their place in next summer's finals in Israel with a 2-0 aggregate win.

Scuffles involving Serbian supporters, players and other officials broke out after the final whistle, while England's Danny Rose was sent off for reacting angrily to racial abuse.

Rose was pushed in the back as he left the field and gestured to indicate that monkey chants had been aimed at him.

England assistant coach Steve Wigley was also caught up in the trouble and was manhandled as he made his way to the tunnel.

A statement from the FA read: "The FA condemns both the scenes of racism and the confrontation at the final whistle during which time our players and staff were under extreme provocation.

"The FA has reported a number of incidents of racism to UEFA following the fixture.

"These were seemingly aimed at a number of England's black players by the crowd. The matter is now with UEFA."

Head coach Stuart Pearce told BBC Sport: "One or two of the technical staff from the opposition, and I don't include their manager in that, didn't cover themselves in glory on the pitch at the end.

"Punches, headbutts were thrown, and God knows what else. We will let the authorities deal with this at UEFA."

Former England international Paul Ince has called for Serbia to be banned from tournament football.

"It's disgraceful to see these scenes," said the former Liverpool and Manchester United midfielder, whose son Tom featured for England.

Ince admitted he had been worried for the safety of the 20-year-old, who plays for Blackpool.

"When your son's out there it's worrying," he told ESPN. "You could just see if they [England] were to win or go through, it was getting more hostile.

"[Fifia boss] Sepp Blatter and [Uefa chief Michel] Platini need to look at this.

"If it was me they [Serbia] would be kicked out for the next five tournaments - European, World Cups - but they will get a little ban and that will be it. Things like that are not what we want to see in football - it takes it back to the dark ages."

Professional Footballers' Association chairman Clarke Carlisle told BBC Radio Five: "You should not have to experience those scenes in this day and age. It was utterly deplorable behaviour.

"It's quite farcical. A guy is racially abused and then he gets punished for containing his reaction to that.

"We saw how the whole debacle progressed into punching, kicking... We saw photos of headbutts going on in the staff. But Danny Rose for kicking a ball away ends up getting himself sent off. This is just wrong.

"UEFA need to make a standpoint here and more importantly FIFA, I feel, because it was a FIFA qualification tournament. The message has to come from the top down that this behaviour will not be tolerated."

A match between the two countries at the 2007 Under-21 European Championship in the Netherlands was marred when England defender Nedum Onuoha was racially abused.

Serbia were fined £16,000 by UEFA after that incident.
