President John Evans Atta Mills has expressed worry over strikes and threats of industrial action by civil and public sector workers.

He said the government should rather be supported to fully implement the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP), instead of people resorting to needless industrial actions.

Addressing a durbar of the chiefs and people of Dodowa in the Dangme West District of the Greater Accra Region, as part of his three-day working tour of the region, the President said it was important for striking doctors to resume work, since lives lost during the period of the industrial action could not be reversed.

He explained that the SSPP, which was initiated by the previous administration without any commitment, could have been avoided by the government, but “we have shown good faith with the people by the implementation of the salary policy”.

He stated that the government was ready for the negotiation table to discuss the welfare of all workers, stressing, “We are building a sustainable economy.”

Lauding paramedics and nurses who decided not to join the industrial action, President Mills said the government was doing only what was good for the nation for the public to continue to have faith in those in charge of affairs of the nation.
