Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie
The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie has rubbished allegations that the NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo has no respect for Islam, after he delivered his policy a statement on Eid day.
Popularly known as Sir John, he described such criticisms as "infantile and village politics" which should be despised by all.
The leader of the biggest opposition delivered his major policy statement at the maiden Liberty Lectures organized by the pro-NPP policy think tank, Danquah Institute last Tuesday.
The Daily Post and Ghanaian Lens newspapers reported that the day he chose to present his policy showed that he had gross disrespect for Islamic religion.
Speaking on Asempa Fm’s current affairs programme Ekosii Sen, Sir John said the Eid day did not mean if you have something to do you should not do because it is a day for Muslims.
The NPP General Secretary quibbled: so if it is a day for Muslims, so don’t we eat, drink and even if we have funeral to attend don’t we do so because it is a day for Muslims?
He asked those chastising the NPP flagbearer to go to Iraq, Iran and the other Middle East countries to observe that even on the Eid Ul-Fitr day people were fighting, and wanted to know if one can deduce from it that it is a disdain against Islam.
The General Secretary of the Youth for Muslim Renaissance, Sadat Mohammed had earlier said that Nana Addo should in three days apologize for ‘denigrating’ Muslims.
To him, the Youth for Muslim Renaissance is working for the ruling NDC and will pay dearly for that ‘job’ from the paymasters.
He noted that he visited Nima, a popular Muslim community in Accra, and traders were selling and questioned if that can also be described as a disdain to Islam?
He took a swipe at the critics of Nana Addo’s statement adding that if they think the statement is nothing to go by then why the noise making.
He hinted that the NDC is talking because Nana’s statement has hit the Government hard, which they have nothing to say than to rubbish it.
